The Mad Hatter
He’s absolutely the fantasy character that I adore!
The Mad Hatter (The Hatter) is a character created by Lewis Carroll and appeared for the first time in 1865 novel ”Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” (commonly shortened to “Alice in Wonderland”) The character’s name comes from the old English expression “Mad as a hatter” derived from the custom to use mercury in the manufacture of hats; mercury is a substance that had devastating effects on the mental health of the hatters artisans.
Unfortunately there’s nothing pleasant or fun in all this, but here I wish to emphasize above all the fact that Lewis Carroll, being ironic about the famous English saying and giving emphasis to the “madness” of the Hatter, created an extraordinary character and a definitely unique type!
Later, the magical way Johnny Depp brought to the screen his version of the Hatter into the Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”, made me love the character even more.
Thanks to this beautiful interpretation, drawn by strong expressions of sweetness, tenderness and extrovert originality, cleverly enhanced by special effects that paint the character in a rainbow of expressions, the Hatter, in its original madness turns out to be a very intelligent, alert, sensitive friend, a good heart with a great poetical creativity that affects the heart.
I love the Mad Hatter, because in his mind are skillfully blended and balanced the creative talent, that every true artist has in his own mind, with that bit of magic of an enchanted world, which too often people believe to be only a part of childhood fantasies, although this world does really exist: each one of us can find the Wonderland, just around the corner … or inside the brilliant “madness” of every creative artist.
I love that piece of magic hat that often I can virtually wear , feeling myself like a ”Mad Hatter”!
I love the Mad Hatter that I can find in the heart of who knows to have a little ‘of that magical world” inside… I love the Mad Hatter who dwells in the heart of who can create art, music, poetry and magic!
